There’s something magical about Wayanad – a quiet district tucked away in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India. Far from the noise of crowded tourist destinations, Wayanad offers a perfect blend of lush green hills, spice plantations, waterfalls, and tribal culture. I spent 4 unforgettable days exploring this paradise, and here’s a glimpse into my journey.
I started my adventure at Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Surrounded by misty hills and calm waters, it was a peaceful beginning to the trip. A short boat ride later, I was treated to postcard-perfect views of the reservoir. That evening, I checked into a treehouse stay – nestled in the forest, with nothing but cicadas and cool breeze for company.
A morning safari at Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was next. It’s one of the few places where you can still spot elephants, bison, and even the elusive leopard in their natural habitat. I wasn’t lucky enough to see a big cat, but the elephants more than made up for it. Later, I visited Edakkal Caves, where 6,000-year-old rock carvings whisper stories from the past.
What’s a trip to Wayanad without chasing waterfalls? Soochipara Falls was a refreshing delight. A bit of a trek to get there, but absolutely worth it. The water gushed down with power, and I couldn’t resist stepping into the cool stream at the base. Pro tip: wear good trekking shoes – the path can get slippery.
On the final day, I slowed down. Explored the local markets, picked up some organic spices and handmade crafts, and chatted with a few locals who recommended a hidden café near Pookode Lake. The filter coffee there? Heaven.
Wayanad isn’t about ticking off checkboxes. It’s about slowing down, breathing in nature, and discovering moments that stay with you long after the trip is over. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or a laid-back traveler, Wayanad has something for you.
Would I go back? Absolutely.
